What We Grow

At Buhr Erickson Farm Partnership we select our crops with precision. We know our land and what it will produce. We have been growing many crops and have perfected our harvest.

Strip Tilling

What do you do with something that is costly and potentially harmful when not used correctly? Put it only where you need it! Our strip till approach disturbs only about 1/3 the soil surface to dry and warm the seeding zone. Compared to traditional tillage, our system can save 3.5 tons of soil per acre per year … that’s at least 12 dump trucks full per 150-acre field per year! Top soil is one of humanity’s most important and irreplaceable assets, not to mention a sound financial investment. Fighting to conserve this precious resource is a battle we can’t afford to lose!

Targeted Fertilization

Farmland, much like a garden, does not perform uniformly across every area. Our fertility programs recognize these natural variations by creating detailed management zones within each field. Through soil sampling and advanced data analysis, we develop nutrient plans tailored to the specific needs of each zone. Fertilizer is applied directly beneath the plant at precise rates, delivering the right nutrients in the right place. This method minimizes over-application and reduces fertilizer use by approximately 25% compared to traditional practices. The outcome is improved water quality, more efficient use of finite fertilizer resources, and greater returns from every pound applied—delivering true, long-term sustainability.

Prescription Planting

Modern agriculture goes far beyond traditional perceptions. At Buhr Erickson Farms, we leverage cutting-edge technology to enhance efficiency and performance. Our advanced planter systems automatically adjust seeding rates according to prescriptions designed for each management zone and can seamlessly switch between two crop hybrids while planting. This flexibility ensures each variety is matched to the environment where it performs best. By creating optimal growing conditions for every plant, we increase productivity without additional inputs—delivering strong returns for our land-owning partners while benefiting both the land and long-term profitability.

+ 12% Higher Yields than Other Area Farms!

Cover Crop

It may seem a bit odd, but did you know Buhr Erickson Farms actually plants crops we don’t harvest and sell? Why? Well, how much time do you have?! Living roots in the soil after our crops are harvested means more biodiversity. By introducing new plant species, the population of tiny organisms in the soil, vital to healthy plants, increases. Soil is held in place, standing up to rain and wind. Unused fertilizer is absorbed and held, keeping it out of our water and saving it for next year’s crops. Not to mention, CO2 continues to be sequestered below ground, building soil health and increasing air quality.  How much CO2 is put underground? The equivalent to 94 fewer cars on our roads per 150 acres we farm every year! Now that’s green!

94 Fewer Cars on the Road!

Corn

At Buhr Erickson Farms, we grow #2 yellow corn, which is about 50-60% of our rotation annually. We take pride in growing mostly non-gmo/conventional corn. Our corn gets delivered to either a local train shuttle loader, which ships our corn to the pacific northwest and eventually to South East Asia for animal feed or we haul it directly to an ethanol plant 20 miles away. If we were to haul all of our corn annually to the ethanol plant we would produce 2.1 million gallons of ethanol.

Soybeans

At Buhr Erickson Farms, we also grow soybeans, which makes up about 10-30% of our rotation annually. Some years we raise soybeans for seed production. Our soybeans either get sold to local seed companies for seed or shipped to a local train shuttle loader where they get exported to the Pacific Northwest & eventually to South East Asia for animal feed or we haul it to the local soybean crushing plant, where they crush the soybeans into soy oil and soymeal.

Edible Beans

At Buhr Erickson Farms, we grow a version of edible beans called Pinto beans. This consists of about 25-40% of our rotation annually. The pintos we raise are the ones you would cook or put in your bean dips, etc. We haul them to a local packer that cleans, washes, packages, and ships them directly to a grocery store near you.
